Arthur was born in Victoria, Australia, on the 22nd October, 1889. He enlisted in Regina, Saskatchewan, 12th November 1914, stating his occupation as a teamster, and his next of kin as Lydia Sellors, of Lea Wood, Derbyshire. He had previously served for five years in the Royal Navy.
He was five feet five inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair, and he belonged to the Church of England.
